Guitar Hero at 20 – The Plastic Guitar That United Generations Among Music Fans

Marking two decades after the legendary game hit the market in North America, offering players everywhere the tools to become a rock star. Not in reality, but try telling that someone who's mastered Free Bird’s lengthy instrumental break before a packed living-room audience.

Created by the developers, the game provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to match on-screen cues moving along the screen synchronized to the music. Every sequence corresponded to specific notes, producing the sensation of a genuine live show.

The studio previously tried its hand in the music genre prior to teaming up with RedOctane, later purchased by Activision in 2006. Collaboratively, they laid the groundwork for a surprising billion-dollar franchise that had a significant influence for many of the artists featured, showcasing classic groups to a new generation of gaming enthusiasts.

A former executive, former COO of Harmonix, remembers the initial budgetary hurdles in securing the songs – even though initial releases primarily featured rerecorded tracks.

“We rerecorded every song because the dollar figure prohibitive,” he explains. “Despite having the publishing rights alone, it proved nearly impossible. We couldn’t get bands like the Who – the publisher had virtually no money, and we were pretty convinced it would fail. However, when the game took off, album purchases airtime were going up, everyone wanted to participate.”

He continues: “Among the remarkable aspects was the number of parents reached out expressing gratitude for introducing their children to the songs they loved. It became a multigenerational thing.”

Classic Rock Finds Younger Fans

Northern Irish group the Answer included their track in the 2008 release Guitar Hero World Tour. Guitarist the artist remembers how the series brought older hits back into vogue: “Guitar Hero provided a larger, new demographic. Typically such music was seen as outdated material, however when it was included in the game young people discovered it, suddenly it became trendy. This validated it, eliminating the outdated label. It gave our catalog renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the band's first record was still not available stateside, so the game served as a primary platform of discovery for the group as they went on US tour supporting AC/DC. “Their crew were playing the song during travel, and some of them recognized us from Guitar Hero,” he notes.

Major Band Titles Enduring Influence

Rock’s biggest acts soon took advantage of the series’ popularity, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and others featuring in specialized spin-off titles centered around each band’s catalogue and associated stories, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. In the case of, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, reportedly to have made the group greater revenue than any of their studio albums. It sold well over half a million copies in its first week, and sales of Aerosmith’s music saw an increase of up to 40% during an era when the music business faced decline.

The series still motivates nimble-fingered dedication within the community. Recently, a streamer completed a remarkable feat featuring the challenging track – a notoriously difficult anthem popularized through the game – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with similar mechanics and extensive personalization features. The song is difficult enough on expert mode, not to mention played at increased tempo and without missing every one of the thousands of cues. The streamer claimed requiring nine months of practice.

“Guitar Hero is a fun, imaginary experience. If you play Call of Duty, it doesn't imply you ought to use a real gun and enlist,” notes musician the artist.

The band previously completed a successful tour before Through the Fire and Flames was featured on Guitar Hero III, but Li says it turned them into widely recognized. “I recall the record label informing us that our records were moving like crazy,” he shares. “It exploded when we next toured, and we performed just before the headliners at the event.”

Indeed, DragonForce’s exposure via the game was so immense that it threatened to eclipsing all other the band has done. Last year, the track featured in promotional material for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I thought differently, but I’ve made peace with it,” he admits. “Should you just listen to a single track, that's fine – each person has their own musical journey and I’m glad we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Legacy of a Iconic Controller

The best marketing, be it for automobiles, apparel or games, extends beyond mere transactions – it inspires a longing. Was the game able to harness this? “Precisely what our team aiming to achieve,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of performing as a music icon in the spotlight. From day one, the creators believed there’s an instinctive urge to create songs, and their goal was to use technology to enable everyone to participate”.

The majority of Guitar Hero games were released in just a half-decade between 2005 and 2010, including derivative titles like DJ Hero, including a spinning deck, and the band-focused game. After that, corporate focus in plastic instruments waned, aside from a short-lived revival several years later.

Titles such as Clone Hero and Fortnite Festival have maintained the community alive, with expectations of a new product from the original publisher on the way. Recently formed developers has entered production on its debut music game. Original co-founders are participating in advisory roles. Are gamers prepared to welcome another game in the spirit of the classic?

“Our team believed those games might become similar to sports games where you can releases,” he remarks. “There’s so much new music that it could be perennially popular, thus I remain hopeful. It's entirely possible why it can’t persist with new generations.”
