A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.
The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
